Follow this craft tutorial to create your own toy sword & shield set inspired by the adventure-packed new animated series for kids from TeamTO, My Knight and Me!

Shield & Sword Craft

My Knight and Me is meant for kids ages 6-10 and it follows the quests of a colorful and charismatic trio of knights in shining armor. This fun cast of characters is made up of loyal, street-smart Jimmy the Squire; daring and determined Cat the Princess; and bold and courageous Henri of Orange, Jimmy’s dad and a charmingly inept, yet passionately chivalrous knight who might not be the most efficient protector of the realm – but sure is the funniest! Together, the knightly group sets out from the Kingdom of Epic to save the day and brighten the Dark Ages!

The series models close family ties (Jimmy thinks his dad is the best!), emphasizes the importance of teamwork (together, Jimmy, Cat and Henri can overcome any challenge  that comes their way!) and underscores the importance of using strategy over might to solve problems (Jimmy is the man with a plan!).

My Knight and Me also features clever anachronisms (like Smart-Mirrors that resemble today’s iPhones, set in the Middle Ages), which add to the uniqueness of the show. The epic show airs weekdays at 12pm (ET/PT) on Cartoon Network .

After you set up your DVR’s to watch My Knight and Me, head to the craft store to pick up your supplies for this sword and shield toy set inspired by the series.

What you will need to Make Your Own Sword & Shield Toy Set:

  • Styrofoam Cone
  • Hot Glue/Glue Gun
  • Felt
  • Plastic Circle Serving Tray
  •  Scissors
  • Box Cutter
  • Painters Tape
  • Metallic Spray Paint
  • Wooden Decorative Cross or T Shape

To Make the Sword Craft:

Start out by using your box cutter to cut out an inch of the Styrofoam or enough space to fit your handle (the cross).

Shield & Sword Craft

Once you have enough space dug out, place the cross inside to ensure you have created enough space to hold the handle securely, fill the sides and bottom of the hole with hot glue.

Shield & Sword Craft

Slide the cross into the Styrofoam pushing down with a good amount of pressure to ensure good contact with the glue on the bottom of the hole.

Shield & Sword Craft

Spray the entire sword from the styrofoam all the way down to the bottom of the handle. Allow to dry before handling as the metallic spray paint is very tacky and it will leave fingerprints on your sword.

To make the Shield Craft:

Using the painters tape, mark of the design you would like with painters tape. I chose to leave a cross shape on the red platter because I love the bright shiny color coming through against the metallic finish of the spray paint.

Shield & Sword Craft

I also taped off the edges to give the shield another dimension and I think the colors work well together.

Shield & Sword Craft

Make sure you press down on the tape to ensure good contact otherwise the spray paint may get under the edges of the tape. Also be sure to stand back when spraying as the plastic surface will cause any over spray to run and ruin your design.

Shield & Sword Craft

After your spray paint has dried completely, pull off the painters tape to reveal your design.

Shield & Sword Craft

On the back of the shield, attach a handle by cutting a piece of felt long enough for good contact.

Shield & Sword Craft

Secure the felt on the back of the shield with hot glue underneath each end.

Shield & Sword Craft

Make sure a hand will fit snugly underneath without slipping off before securing permanently.

Shield & Sword Craft

When your handle has dried, your child can have countless hours of fun with this My Knight and Me Inspired Sword and Shield Play Set!
