DIY Upcycle Kids Clothes

I have a really hard time getting rid of things, especially the things that have strong memories attached to them, like memories of my daughter’s childhood which seems to be slipping away. This DIY Upcycle is the perfect ways to keep your kid’s clothes around long enough to come to terms with the fact that they are growing up so fast.

In my opinion, the best way to upcycle an item is to make it into something you will actually use again and again.

This is also a great way to not look like a hoarder who can not let go of stuff. Just meet any sideways looks with the new way you so creatively used the item in question.

I had a lot of cute skirts that my daughter didn’t wear anymore so we decided to spend some time with a fun DIY project and make Purses from Upcycled Skirts!
Easy DIY Skirt Upcycled Purse

This project is so fun and easy to do. My daughter and I had a lot of fun making our DIY Purses, this is such an easy DIY for kids.

We added a couple of buttons to hide the stitching on the straps as well as an iron-on patch but you can decorate your purse however you would like.

What you will need to create your own DIY Purse Upcycle from Kids Clothes is:

  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Skirt
  • Scissors

The possibilities are endless for decorating your purse but a few easy ways to add a little flair are buttons, iron-on patch, bedazzling, or sewing on different colored fabric to show your personality.

Cute Skirt DIY

Following this diagram below, in a few easy steps, your purse will be ready to decorate.

Cut the waistband off and save that part to sew back on as a strap. The line doesn’t have to be perfect, you can cut off the excess fabric to even it out when done with this step.

Sew the bottom of the skirt closed from one end to the other. To be sure that you don’t lose any of your precious items, go ahead and sew another line across the bottom.

The same goes for any skirt but if you are working with ruffles like we were with the green skirt, start higher up from the bottom, the ruffles will hide any errors with sewing.

Trust me, I need all of the help I can get in that area, my sewing is very sloppy but it keeps things together so I will continue to put little effort into getting better for now.

Take the waistband that you cut off and sew each end to the inside of the purse, where you cut the waistband from.

I really like how the skirt with ruffles turned out, those cute little folds in the fabric always bring me back to the days when my little girl was still little.

She used to wear princess dresses every single day and since my husband does the laundry, I still don’t know how I tricked this guy into marrying me, he was left with the brutal chore of hang drying all of them, every single day.

At one point when the laundry was backed up, he suggested that she wear a pair of pants and apparently PANTS was her trigger word because many years later she still remembers him saying, ” I wish there were a princess movie where the princesses wore pants occasionally, called Princesses Day Off.

She reminded me of this the other day when we were back to school clothes shopping. I questioned her choice of buying 5 pairs of the same jeans with holes in them to wear with five of the same cropped hoodies in different shades that she had picked out.

When I paid that bill, I started thinking about the possibilities of reusing her clothes and what kind of upcycle I could do with these items when she decides cropped hoodies with ripped jeans are out like princess dresses. DIY Upcycle Skirt Purse

I can think of a lot of upcycling ideas for the cropped hoodie but those jeans have so many holes in them they kind of look like someone already attempted to upcycle kids clothes but didn’t quite nail it. I like the style but it really takes away from the quality and longevity of clothes when you start putting holes in them.

There is always an upcycle project with kids clothes just waiting to be done so this DIY is a perfect way to get more for your money.

I go through a lot of purses and handbags, mostly because I like to carry around my planner and a book at all times. I have a few skirts that will love their new purpose in life.
