How to Make Sugar Free Applesauce

This section explains the apple sauce cooking process. If you want the full recipe with instructions and measurements be sure to check the recipe card below.

Step 1:

Begin by removing the apple peels from 5 pounds of apples. This step is important for the best applesauce because the apple skins will not break down during the cooking process so it’s a good idea to use an apple peeler to get a smooth applesauce.

You can use whichever type of apple you prefer for this unsweetened applesauce recipe, see the section below on the different types of fresh apples to use for the best flavor.

Step 2:

Add the apples to a food strainer and rinse well, then add them to the slow cooker. Next, add the other simple ingredients (honey, cinnamon, and a little bit of water).

Step 3:

Set the crockpot to high heat and allow the healthy applesauce to cook for about 7 hours. If you prefer to cook on low heat or medium heat be sure to adjust the overall cook time for a perfect end result.

Step 4:

After the applesauce has been cooked thoroughly, you will have an apple cider-type liquid in the CrockPot. You can drain this out and save it for later use, drink it, or throw it away.

I just like to add a little extra water to prevent things from burning to the crockpot and the liquid increases as the apples cook.

After draining the excess liquid, put this basic applesauce recipe into a high-speed blender, immersion blender, or food processor for a smoother texture.

Step 5:

Store the homemade unsweetened applesauce in an airtight container. Enjoy fresh, or store the cooled leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.

You could also store this sugar-free applesauce in freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 1 month.

For those inclined towards a sweeter rendition, consider opting for sweeter apples such as Honeycrisp apples, Gala apples, Fuji apples, or Pink Lady apples. This is the best way to get a sweet flavor from the natural sugars without adding any extra sugar to the apple puree.

If you like tart applesauce, granny smith apples are a good choice for all of your favorite apple recipes.

If you are making instant pot applesauce, stovetop applesauce in a Dutch oven or large pot, and want a softer variety of apples that cooks down faster, choose Golden Delicious, McIntosh, or Braeburn apples.

Alternatively, you can use a food mill or potato masher to break down the apples or serve up a chunky applesauce using whichever varieties of apples you want.

I've never made applesauce in the crockpot, but when my boys were babies I did make them applesauce as baby food and I just steamed them in my fancy little baby bullet steamer. It was great fun, but now that I have no more babies I will have to give this a try! They all LOVE applesauce!
