A Trip to the Unsinkable Molly Brown Museum in Denver

I received free admission in exchange for coverage of the Molly Brown Museum in Denver, Colorado. All opinions are my own.

This past week, my family took a trip out to Denver, Colorado for the first time. When we were planning things to do in Denver, we knew that we had to visit the Unsinkable Molly Brown Museum so we set our GPS accordingly and hit the road, headed straight to the Molly Brown Museum.

When we arrived at the Molly Brown House, we got in line to get our tickets and looked around at some of the souvenirs they had to offer. While a few things caught my eye, I didn’t want to carry them through the house while on then tour so I made a mental note of where I could find them after we visited the house.

Keep in mind when visiting The Molly Brown House Museum to arrive early because even if you get there before the first tour begins, you may not get to tickets to the tour you had in mind depending on how busy they are. We arrived about 30 minutes before the first tour but while we waited, we observed tickets being sold for the last tour of the day.

We were battling traffic the whole way so it was essential for us to leave early with plenty of time to spare. It was a holiday weekend so this could be why The Molly Brown House was so packed but it’s better to be early when planning things to do in Denver.

If you have never heard of Molly Brown, you may know her better as The Unsinkable Molly Brown or even her birth name, Margaret Tobin Brown.

You may also remember her from the widely popular movie, The Titanic. Kathy Bates played The Unsinkable Molly Brown, she was the rich lady that was actually nice to Jack Dawson,  and was often refered to as “New Money”.

That is where I had first heard the name Molly Brown. I had no idea that her home was preserved and on display until I was looking for Things to Do in Denver.

I love learning about the Titanic and the passengers whose lives the ship had changed forever. That seemed to be the case for The Unsinkable Molly Brown as well, in fact, the name Molly Brown was more of a nickname the press had given Margaret and she didn’t actually go by that.

It turns out that Margaret received a highly coveted education all the way up to the old age of thriteen, in those days that was usually a privelage reserved for the wealthy, which Molly Brown knew nothing about at this point in life.

She made her money much later in life, after working hard in a factory at the age of thriteen which also gave her an appreciation and insight of how the less fortunate lived before making her fortune in the gold industry.

I enjoyed looking around her home and seeing all of the beautiful pieces both from her collection as well as pieces from the time that were placed throughout the Molly Brown House Museum.

I especially loved the stained glass in some of the windows as well as the mounts throughout the house.

I especially admired the Polar Bear rug in the parlor, you don’t see something like that every day. It was quite beautiful, but unlike Molly Brown, I am no hunter although I do admire the mounts throughout her home.

There is no flash photography allowed in the Molly Brown House Museum and the shades were drawn most likely due to the heat, so I apologize for the blurry photos.

Another part of the home I really enjoyed was the dining area. I loved how the table was set as if a dinner party was about take place, furnished with everything needed to host a formal dinner including the note cards with famous names like Kellogg and Campbell.

There wasn’t a lot of information throughout the house about the trip on the Titanic but I learned that there was so much more to The Unsinkable Molly Brown than just the Titanic. She was quite a philanthropist and even helped raise funds for the less fortunate passengers that were displaced by the Titanic tragedy.

If you are looking for things to do in Denver, you have to add The Molly Brown Museum to your list of fun family places to visit.

Would your family enjoy learning more about The Unsinkable Molly Brown and enjoy visiting the Molly Brown House Museum?

A fascinating little bit of history. For some reason I was thinking she had something to do with a going over the Niagra Falls stunt, also.
