As the beginning of another new year is approaching, some of us are thinking about our future and what we will change today to help us live a better tomorrow. Then there are some of us that are in no way thinking about making a promise to ourselves that statistics show is most likely to be broken before the first month of our year long commitment is up. It’s hard to see a point in promising to do something that we are not willing to put a genuine effort into doing. The best way to look at New Year’s Resolutions in my opinion is to choose one or many that will actually improve your life. Whether you believe in the tradition or not, adopting one of these 9 New Year’s Resolution Idea’s will help you live a more happy and healthy life.
1. Read More
I have never heard anyone complain about spending too much time reading. I have however heard many people complain that they wish they had more time for it. I suggest carving out a little time everyday to read a few pages, this could be before bed to help you wind down or in the morning to get your mind going, whatever works for you.
2.Cut Down On Screen Time
Everyone is always looking at their smart phones or at a computer screen. It seems that almost everyone is barely present in the moment and always seem to be preoccupied with updating their next move on social media. Spending less time with technology can help you check back into your life.
3.Learn To Play An Instrument
Unplugging from social media can give a surprising amount of time back to your life. Use that time wisely and take lessons to play an instrument you have always been interested in. Learning to play the guitar or piano can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience that you are sure to never regret.
4. Quit Smoking
A 9 New Year’s Resolution Idea’s list would not be complete without adding quitting smoking. Obviously it is bad for you and I am sure you have heard that a million times but there are many other reasons to replay in your head when getting that dreaded craving. They smell terrible and take up time that you could use to do something actually productive in your life. If you have children that see you smoke, they are more likely to become smokers themselves, set a good example by tossing that nasty habit for good this time. Think of the amount of money you would be able to save, put it into a jar and use it at the end of the first week to buy yourself something nice, you deserve it!
5. Cut Out Fast Food
There are many reasons to pass up that fast food restaurant and eat anywhere else. Fast food is terrible for your health, it’s getting more expensive by the day it seems, and the atmosphere isn’t exactly inviting. Even if you hit the drive-thru you are either eating your food in your car, which is never an enjoyable experience, or headed back home with a meal that is bound to be at an unappealing temperature.
6. Make Homemade More Often
Baking your own bread and cooking most of your meals is not only healthier than picking up a quick meal but it is always tastier. Homemade bread is a great way to put excitement into even the most boring sandwich. Plus being able to control what you add or don’t add to your food can improve your health with very little effort by cutting out things like high fructose corn syrup.
7. Lose Weight
Cut back on some of those processed foods and drop a few pounds this year. Being obese is more detrimental to your health than smoking and you can easily make some changes in your life to get started on a healthy weight loss journey. You don’t have to sacrifice flavor to eat healthy, you can still indulge in some tasty treats while losing weight, the ingredients are the key to success. I make all of my foods without flour or sugar and am still able to eat delicious cookies, ice cream, pies, and shakes with the best tasting ingredients possible. Check out my recipes for the SCD diet (Specific Carbohydrate Diet) which has helped me lose 25 lbs. in 3 months.
8. Learn Yoga
Even if you aren’t ready to train for a marathon, starting small and learning a few yoga poses can be a great improvement to your physical and mental health. The best part about Yoga is that there are no gym memberships required and you can basically practice it anywhere. Learn a few moves and whenever the mood strikes ,you can strike a pose!
9.Take Your Dog For A Walk
Include your best friend in your healthy new lifestyle, he will be thrilled to go for a walk with you. Dogs enjoy getting outdoors and exploring with their owners and it is a great way to get some exercise. Taking your dog at the same time daily can help get you into a routine and you will have him to answer to if you decide to give up.
Picking one or many of these 9 New Year’s Resolution Idea’s will be a great way to start of the new year. You will be doing yourself a favor and although the changes may be hard at first before you know it, you will be in a routine and living a happier healthier life!
Happy New Year!
