Reading Resolution May: A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult

I have received an advanced readers copy of A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult to facilitate my book review. All opinions are my own.

A Spark of Light is the latest book from an author who has mastered the art of delving into controversial subjects. Jodi Picoult has never shied away from pressing her reader’s buttons in the past and this time she is exploring the hot topic of abortion.

A Spark of Light seems like it hits the ground running, which is what I have come to expect from novels by Jodi Picoult.

The first chapter sets the scene in rural Mississippi while giving some background to the interesting characters that represent all sides of the highly divisive issue, abortion.

Everyone is relatable in their own way, no matter where you stand on the issue the book has you rooting for all of them because they share a common obstacle right out of the gate, an active shooter situation.

While introducing you to each person being held hostage you can easily place yourself in the very real and unfortunately very common situation that all of us could face at any time.

This unfortunate event is taking place at a women’s reproductive health clinic where we learn about the lives of the women involved, the medical staff at the center, the shooter, and the hostage negotiator outside as well as how they are all connected.

I have to admit I have not dedicated the time required to read a good book in the past few years. I am not going to say that I have no time to read because it is about what you spend your time on, everyone has time for something it just depends on what you want that something to be, for me, that something has not been reading.

I’m not sure how I have cut it out of my life because I truly enjoy reading so recently I have decided that I would spend less time staring at a screen at night and more time staring at the latest Jodi Picoult book.

Afterall there is an entire bookcase full of Jodi Picoult books at my house thanks to my daughter being a huge fan.

A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult

She has been a Jodi Picoult fan for many years and not only has she collected the books but we also enjoy the movies based on her books, when we can get our hands on them.

We recently watched Salem Falls, The Pact, and Plain Truth after scoring the movies online so now those books are on my read list. My daughter read the books before watching so this gave us each an interesting perspective and even more to talk about after consuming each one.

She has both the softcover and hardcover of her favorites as well as an autographed copy that has become one of her most prized possessions.

When her language arts teacher prompted students to write a letter to anyone about any subject they would like, she wrote a letter to Jodi Picoult. In the letter she urged her favorite author who often writes about daring subjects, to cover the topic of sex trafficking.

Unfortunately, this is a topic we have talked a great deal about due to the increase in activity around the world and specifically in our own town of Cedar Rapids.

As a parent, I have given her the information she needs to protect herself and like the amazing woman she is becoming right before my eyes, she has decided to use that information to help others.

Obviously, the letter was unanswered due to the high volume of mail you could imagine a bestselling author must receive but her teacher was intrigued by her topic suggestion and I feel like it was still very effective.

Once she told me that she had suggested the topic, I have not stopped thinking about it. This is especially true as I drive past the many massage parlors in Cedar Rapids that I know to have more going on behind the scenes than they care to admit.

Everyone kind of knows what’s really going on but few really think about the sex trafficking angle, they just assume these girls want to be there, that they earn a decent living this way.

That just isn’t true and young girls seem to be in more danger of being abducted these days so it is a great topic to cover. Since she is a gifted writer as well, maybe she will share her own novel all about it someday, that would be pretty neat but not too surprising, she is an incredible kid.

Her language arts teacher encouraged each student to write to anyone about anything so of course, she would write to Jodi Picoult, that part I could have guessed. The topic was more daring than what I would have expected from her but she is full of surprises and I am very proud.

She has loved everything by Jodi Picoult and was so excited to find out that I was sharing a review of her latest book, A Spark of Light.
