Reading Resolution: David Goggins Can’t Hurt Me

I have received a copy of Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins for the purposes of featuring this amazing book as part of my Reading Resolution series, this post contains affiliate links.

January’s Reading Resolution feature is Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins, an inspiring memoir that shares how mastering your mind will help you defy the odds. You may be wondering what that means and even when I tell you, your mind will not only begin to doubt that this could apply to your struggles but it will also try to make you believe that David Goggins is some kind of exception, a superhuman.

Well, that isn’t the case and after reading Can’t Hurt Me, it became clear that everyone has a little Goggins in them, everyone has what it takes to achieve their goals, no matter what they are.

Letting yourself believe that he is some kind of superhuman, let’s you off the hook, it keeps you from being held accountable for your own failures or shortcomings by dismissing him as special.

It’s easy to ignore the fact that you aren’t living up to your full potential when you make excuses and let yourself believe that another human is somehow more capable than you.

Most people aren’t using anywhere near their full potential. That was the case for this regular guy turned Navy Seal who has figured out how to push his limits and thrive outside of his comfort zone.

He was a regular guy working a regular nine to five that he hated and put the work in to become the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training.

He has run 60 ultra-marathons, triathlons, and ultra-triathlons, and once held a Guinness World Record for doing 4,030 pull-ups in 17 hours.

You may tell yourself that this guy is superhuman or somehow born with the natural ability to master these activities but that just isn’t true of Goggins. When he decided that he had enough of his regular job and wanted more from life, he had to overcome a lot of obstacles that most of us think are impossible, like losing over 100 pounds in two months or running a marathon with broken feet.

We all have the ability to work hard to get where we want to be in life but most of us let that little voice inside of our head beat us every time life starts to suck.

Goggins talks about how we need to callous our minds and embraces the suck in order to overcome obstacles and keep hammering on.

We put the barriers in our minds, we let our negative doubting thoughts and the doubt of others talk us out of things we are capable of achieving because when things get rough it’s easy to quit.

David Goggins is in constant pursuit of greatness and he harnesses the power of his mind to help him push through those really hard times that we all face.

He isn’t immune from the pain and suffering of hard work, he has found a way to callous his mind and pulls motivation from within, from what he calls the “cookie jar”.

Things are getting hard? So what? If you quit, you obviously don’t want it bad enough.

Tap into your own cookie jar and use past experiences to fuel you. It reminds me of Bobby Boucher from The Waterboy and how he tapped into the memories of people being mean to him to give him that extra edge.

Not only did he not let the naysayers define him, but he also used their negativity to perform even better.

Reading Resolution

People are always going to doubt you and some will even try to talk you out of your goals because it makes them uncomfortable.

They don’t want you to make them look bad, they want a level playing field where everyone is mediocre without any real ambition to do anything that takes real work.

Most people take the easy way out, they quit when things get hard, they make excuses to let themselves off the hook.

Don’t let yourself take the easy way out, embrace the suck. That’s how you grow, get mentally tough, it’s a lifestyle.

Do all of the things that you don’t want to do, if you don’t want to clean your house, clean your house, if you don’t want to run a mile in the morning before you start your day, do it anyway.

Everyone has a goal or an area in their life that needs to be improved and most of us have a few areas that could use a complete overhaul.

You can also think of quite a few things that in your life that could have gone differently if you had embraced the suck and not taken the path of least resistance.

Don’t listen to that little voice in your head that has always kept you from achieving your goals, no matter what they are.

When it gets hard and you tell yourself that it’s alright to quit, work even harder.

This is the way to callous your mind, do something that sucks every day of your life, that’s how you grow and reach your goals, no matter the obstacles that stand in your way.

David Goggins has proven many times that he can defy the odds and through his inspirational memoir Can’t Hurt Me, he has shown that we all can.
