It is the Back to School season and we have been super busy around here so it has been hard to get time together as a family. Like many moms do, I have mom guilt that sets in during those times when I can’t be in two places at once but everyone needs something and I feel like I need to scream!
Life gets in the way and sometimes we get so busy with the parts of our lives that stress us out the most that we don’t make time for what we love the most. Spending time with our family often gets put off for when we have time, which is never really. There is always something to keep us from spending quality time with our family and before we know it the kids are grown and a bunch of time has past.
Luckily there is a real solution and with a little effort you can make a habit out of enjoying family time again. Making family traditions that help you make time for your family will turn into great memories that you can cherish for a lifetime.
No matter how busy we are, we need to eat. Take advantage of the time you spend eating and enjoy dinner together, as a family.
Give mom or dad or whoever does the cooking at your home the night off! That puts a smile on my face and starts the weekend right!
You can save time by picking up the delicious Hy-Vee Chicken & Diet Coke® Meal Deal! This is a fun family tradition that the usual cook in your house will probably enjoy the most!
Head to Hy-Vee for dinner and you can get a 12 piece chicken bucket, 3 pint sides and a 2 Liter of Diet Coke, all for $24.99!
I like that the meal deal comes with three sides of your choice. It’s nice being able to let everyone choose their favorite side.
I always grab a bottle of Diet Coke while I am at Hy-Vee anyway so this fits in perfectly with my dinner plans.
I also enjoyed being able to select from three different kinds of chicken. I chose the crispy fried chicken because it looked so good.
We also tried the mashed potatoes as well as the shells and cheese, I loved them both!
Everything was delicious and there was plenty to go around with left overs to store for my family of three.
I enjoyed everything so much that I want to carry on this family tradition of not cooking on Friday and picking up this meal deal with Diet Coke from Hy-Vee.
It’s a great way to start the weekend and I love the idea of repeating this every Friday night as part of our weekly Family Tradition.
Here are some other ideas for creating memory worthy Family Traditions and be sure to put your phones away so you can focus on what really matters for the evening!
Game Night- Everyone enjoys game night so this is a solid family tradition that every family can start this week! Grab a couple of board games, a deck of cards, or an electronic game that accommodates the whole family.
Arcade- Maybe your family would rather get out for a couple of hours, if that is the case just head over to your local arcade. Playing games is therapeutic to people of all ages and a great way to work together as a team or have a fun competition depending on then games you enjoy playing.
Bonfire- If the weather permits and you have the ability, sit around a fire, roast some marshmallows, enjoy the fresh air and make this activity part of your family tradition.
Movie Night- Sometimes you just want to relax and sit in front a screen without having to be the one in charge of entertainment. Movie night is the perfect way to spend time with your family while not having to lift a finger.
Crafts- Some of us are craftier than others but no matter your skill level crafting is a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy. I can think of 20 projects to make from a Diet Coke bottle alone! Check out Pinterest for ideas and when your yard is overflowing with popsicle stick bird houses, take a class at a local craft store to learn new ways to enjoy this family tradition.
Camping- If you are brave enough to give up modern conveniences for the night and sleep on dirt while you listen to the sounds that oddly resemble those of a pending attack, go camping. Getting away from your normal scenery can bring a family closer together and just think of all of those memories you will create while peeing in the woods.
Take a Drive- My family spent a good part of the first year that we lived in Iowa just driving around and exploring the area. We would hop in the car and head to the nearest area we had last saw wildlife. It’s amazing how quick time flies when you are watching a turkey vs deer turf war happen. If you feel like you have seen everything that your hometown has to offer, take a mini road trip.
No matter how hectic the weeks gets it is important to take the time to enjoy a fun family tradition each week to allow time to reconnect and catch up.
