As a dog owner and during my time as a vet tech at an emergency animal hospital, I have dealt with many cases of flea infestations. It can be very frustrating and uncomfortable for both the dog as well as the owner but flea infestations are treatable. Unfortunately, a lot of dog owners are misinformed when it comes to what is recommended for their pets so I am happy to share these Flea Protection Tips for Dog Owners.

For protection against a new flea and tick infestation, I recommend using FRONTLINE® Plus Brand Products because it kills fleas, ticks, flea eggs, and flea larvae. While working at the vet clinic, I have seen many severe cases of flea and tick infestations. Some cases were so gruesome that the pets infested with ticks had become anemic and fleas had caused some dogs to be bright red with skin irritation.

Flea Prevention Tips for Dog Owners

It was never easy to watch these dogs suffer and I did my best to explain to each owner how much grief they could save themselves as well as their pets by protecting from these infestations with the proper steps. In order to understand the best practices for flea protection, it helps to understand the life cycle of fleas. The entire flea life cycle is comprised of four developmental stages which are the egg, the larva, the pupa, and the adult flea. An adult female can lay anywhere from 40-50 eggs per day onto your pet which then fall into your carpet, furniture, yard, and anywhere else in their environment. Flea Prevention Tips for Dog Owners The next step is within 10 days, the eggs hatch into flea larvae. Within 5 to 11 days, flea larvae spin a sticky cocoon to become pupae which can remain dormant for up to six months depending on environmental conditions. The next step is when the young flea adults are stimulated to emerge from the cocoon. The adult fleas then mate on the pet within 8-24 hours. The production of flea eggs begins within 24-48 hours of their first blood meal. That lifecycle continues and without proper protection, your pet is susceptible to becoming a host. Flea Prevention Tips for Dog OwnersHead to Walmart and pick up FRONTLINE® Plus for Dogs then apply it to your dog by following the below steps for proper application.

To remove applicator, 1. Use scissors to separate one blister. 2. Use scissors to cut along dotted line. 3. Peel down foil to remove the applicator.
• Open Applicator: Hold upright with foil side toward you and snap applicator tip
• Remove your dog’s collar before applying.
• Part your dog’s hair between the shoulder blades. Place the applicator tip just above the skin and squeeze. Apply entire contents of the applicator in a single spot directly onto the animal’s skin. Do not apply on top of the haircoat. Avoid contact with treated area until dry
• Since FRONTLINE® Plus for Dogs works non-stop for 30 days you need to repeat this process every 30 days for flea and tick protection.

Wow - 40 -50 eggs each day? No wonder infestation is such a problem! My husband reacts so badly to fleas that we decided not to have pets. I'm sure if we used Frontline, it would help me make my case to have a dog someday. It sounds like it really worked well for you. Thank you!
