How to Make Healthy Apple Bread Recipe

So, let’s get started by preheating the oven to 400 degrees and gathering all our ingredients.

In a large bowl, mix all of the wet ingredients and the dry ingredients together, except for the apples. Grease a loaf pan with butter or a cooking spray such as canola oil or avocado oil.

Once the batter is ready, pour half of the batter from the large mixing bowl into a prepared loaf pan.

Chop the apples into bite-sized chunks and place them on top of the first layer. Drizzle honey and sprinkle cinnamon over the apples. Alternatively, you can do this in a small bowl and then transfer to the mix.

Add the leftover bread batter on top and bake at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

The apple bread should be golden brown when done. Allow the loaf to reach room temperature before storing it in an airtight container.

If wrapping with plastic wrap or aluminum foil it is recommended to place the loaf on top of a piece of parchment paper or store it on top of a baking sheet, to keep the loaf intact.

Cinnamon Apple Bread Recipe Substitutions

This recipe was created for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet so it contains ingredients that are deemed legal for those on SCD.

If you are not on a diet limiting your intake of sugar you can choose from a variety of sweeteners such as brown sugar, coconut sugar, refined sugar, or pure maple syrup if you prefer.

You could also use regular apple sauce instead of the unsweetened variety with less sugar.

You could also add in a little bit of sour cream to make this bread extra moist or pour in some chocolate chips for a great way to give this bread a new flavor.

If you love apple bread but large apple chunks aren’t some of your favorite things, you can use grated apples or shredded apples, the bread bakes the same.

You can add lots of apples in a variety of sizes for this recipe or use less, whichever you prefer.

Medium apples, small apples, it really doesn’t matter because this recipe is really easy to customize.

Can I Swap Baking Soda for Baking Powder in Bread?

Swapping baking soda for baking powder in a recipe is not a one-to-one substitution, as they have different chemical properties and functions in baking.

This healthy apple bread recipe uses baking powder as the leavening agent, so making the substitution without proper adjustments could yield unsatisfactory results.

If you want to use baking soda in this recipe, you would need to incorporate an acid, such as buttermilk, plain Greek yogurt, homemade yogurt, lemon juice, or vinegar, to activate the baking soda properly.

Can I Use a Different Flour for this Healthy Apple Bread Recipe?

Yes. This recipe calls for Almond flour which is gluten-free and provides a unique nutty flavor and moisture to baked goods. If you want to substitute it, consider using another nut flour, like hazelnut or cashew flour, for a similar flavor profile or adding in flax eggs which can produce a similar taste.

Keep in mind that these flours may yield slightly different textures and flavors. Alternatively, you could consider using spelt flour, which has a nutty taste and a texture that might work well in this recipe.

However, be aware that spelt flour contains gluten, so it may not be suitable for those with gluten sensitivities.

Coconut flour is highly absorbent and can’t be directly substituted with other flours at a 1:1 ratio.

If you want to use a different flour, consider using a gluten-free flour blend such as oat flour rather than using flours containing whole grains, such as rice flour, tapioca flour, or a blend designed for gluten-free baking.

White whole wheat flour is not a gluten-free option and should be avoided if you’re looking for a gluten-free alternative.

You’ll need to adjust the quantity of flour and possibly the liquid ingredients as well, since coconut flour absorbs more moisture than white flour or all purpose flour.

How to Make Healthy Apple Muffins

If you want to make healthy apple muffins instead of a whole loaf of bread, pour batter into a muffin tin and fill each muffin cup about two-thirds full with the apple bread batter. This will allow room for the muffins to rise as they bake.

Just like with the loaf, you can customize your muffins by adding apple chunks on top drizzling honey, and sprinkling cinnamon for extra flavor and visual appeal.

Bake the muffins at 400 degrees for approximately 20-25 minutes. Keep a close eye on them and check for the perfect texture by inserting a toothpick into the center of a muffin; it should come out clean when they’re ready.

Once done, let the muffins cool in the muffin tin for a few minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.

My grandsons love breads. I make pumpkin, buttermilk, banana, and many others. I have never made apple bread but this sounds delicious. I always use applesauce in place of oil in the bread but have never actually made apple bread. I think I'll give this a try since they all love apples and breads. Thank you.

I love apple bread. I have been trying to avoid gluten because it gives me a headache. Hubby needs to lay off the sugar too. I bet this will be the perfect treat for us both.
