You may know by now that I find cleaning my house very therapeutic.

It’s like a workout with immediate results and I find it to be really good for my soul.

In fact, I enjoy cleaning so much that I have been known to clean other people’s homes as a favor when they were sick or just didn’t have the time to give their homes a good clean.

Looking back now, I realize that I learned this behavior from my grandma Ellen who would always clean people’s houses that she went to visit.

It was especially interesting because everyone would clean their house the best they could in anticipation of her visit, knowing that she would try to keep busy picking up whatever messes were left behind. S

he didn’t do this to rub the poor housekeeping in anyone’s face, she just really liked to clean and really hated to sit still.

Everyone knew this about my grandma, it even became a quirky habit that was kind of endearing.

She could make anything likable though, a woman who could curse at you in Italian, call you an idiot in English and it still put a smile on your face.

She was very much like Sophia from the Golden Girls in that way. When you knew she was coming to visit, you would give your house a thorough clean, trying to get to the grandma Ellen level of a clean house before she arrived.

To the dismay of everyone who lived there, she always found a mess, no matter how meticulous they were in preparation for her arrival.

That’s where I learned how to clean a house and since I associate cleaning with my Grandma Ellen visiting me as a child, giving a house a good deep clean has always been a positive experience.

Another thing you may know about me is that I love saving money and when I can save a few bucks on cleaning products, I get excited.

I just don’t like giving money away for things that are not absolutely necessary.

Having a clean house is pretty necessary for me but picking up a bottle of questionable carpet freshener is not.

So I decided to make my own version without all of the questionable ingredients.

This DIY Homemade Carpet Freshener saves me a couple of bucks for every bottle I make, not bad. Plus you get a lot of other benefits from making your own cleaning products, too.

Using all-natural ingredients is always better in my opinion, especially when it comes to what we use in our homes.

Since you are using all-natural ingredients to make your own homemade cleaning products, you can let your kids do the cleaning without any worry of toxic ingredients doing them harm.

Just add a carpet refresh to the chore list and teach them how to make this Homemade Carpet Freshener.

All you need to make this Homemade Carpet Freshener is:

I like to use a ratio of one cup of Baking Soda to about 20 drops of Lemon Essential Oil. You can pour the mixture into a Shaker Bottle and sprinkle onto your carpet, using the entire solution immediately. I have not tried storing the mixture, I make a fresh batch each time, I let it sit for about 15 minutes and then Vacuum.

I have used this method on many types of carpet but the results may vary depending on your ingredients as well as what you are using it on so be sure to test in a small inconspicuous area the first time you use this homemade cleaning product.

I totally need to try this recipe. My carpet has some stains from the kids dropping food. I hope I can restore my carpet.

This is a great post. I make my own cleaner since I have granite counter tops. Essential oils, vinegar, and baking soda are awesome ingredients for cleaners that are safe for pets and children.
