Do you want to be a runner but are not quite sure how to begin? These 7 tips will show you how to start running and help you reach your fitness goals!
Don’t worry about the 7-minute mile your friend can run, there is no shame in pacing yourself especially when you are a beginner. One of the best ways to accomplish your running goals is to know your limits and be sure that you aren’t pushing yourself too hard. There is no shame in walking in between sprints to catch your breath or to let your body recover when you feel that you have given your all.
Slowing down to a more comfortable pace is not quitting, you can work your way up to a mile in time, track your progress and set goals to make sure you are progressing, no matter how small you think your progress is in the beginning.
When keeping track of your progress by recording your time and distance on each run, you can track your performance. This will help you see the improvements you have made as a beginner and also allow you to celebrate your hard work. Whenever you are able to shave some time off of your mile or run further be sure to write it down and celebrate your accomplishments. It is important to see how your hard work is paying off so be sure to celebrate when you reach your goals.
Find Your Motivation
Quitting is easy when you have no motivation, it is very important to find out what motivates you. Why are you running? Why do you want to push through when things get hard? What is the reason you want to become a runner?
The best resource I can refer to anyone is David Goggins. Look up his videos, follow him on social media, read his best-selling book Can’t Hurt Me. Goggins is the only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller. Be warned that Goggins keeps it real like no other and that means he says everything that comes to mind. He uses profanity to get his message across so if you are easily offended he may not be the one for you but if you are like me, this guy will have you wanting to run miles until your legs fall off.
Wake Up Early
Getting up early in the morning to work out is the only way that I would be able to fit it into my day. I set my alarm exactly one hour before I need to get ready for the day, this way I can always fit my workout in no matter how busy my life gets. Somedays all I want to do is hit that snooze button and go back to sleep but I never give in, I always just get up no matter how hard it can be. You have to get in that kind of mindset, don’t talk yourself out of achieving your own goals, never give in!
Get the Right Gear
Pick up a pair of running shoes, comfortable pants to run in, and get your favorite playlist or audiobook loaded before hitting the trails. Being prepared and having the right gear for running will make it easier to hit the trails or treadmill each day.
Don’t Give Up
One of the best mantras I have come across is from David Goggins, it goes something like I don’t quit when I’m tired, I quit when I’m done! I love that, it is perfect for a beginner. When things get hard, keep going, don’t stop because you are struggling, stop when you have accomplished your goals.
Do It for You, Not for Anyone Else
As a mom, it seems at times that I do everything for everyone, but running is just for me. It’s nice to do something for yourself and when you make a promise to yourself to never give up, nobody can take that from you except you!
