Lip Cancer Prevention

I received these products for the purposes of my honest review and to be featured in this Lip Cancer Prevention article. All opinions are my own.

A lot of us are guilty of not protecting ourselves and taking care of our bodies the way we should. It’s easy to forget and when you don’t hear about things like lip cancer or skin cancer every day it can be even easier to not take it so seriously.

Lip Cancer Prevention

I often find myself out in the sun without the proper protection and I usually regret it after the pain from sunburn sets in. The next time I head outside I put on some sunscreen and I try to get back into a healthy habit of applying sunscreen regularly.

I think a lot of people can relate to my carelessness although skin cancer is pretty common these days, we still don’t take it as seriously as we should. It helps to create healthy habits by keeping sunscreen with you at all times to make sure you have it available when it is most needed. Keep a bottle in your purse or in a waterproof container inside of your car (waterproof: in case it explodes).

Did you know that Lip Cancer is something we need to protect ourselves against as well? I have started to take this seriously when I recently tried out some products from Balmshot and read about the origin of this awesome product.

Lip Cancer Prevention

Wayne S. Forrey, the company’s founder and product inventor, contracted lip cancer due to his outdoor lifestyle and frequently sunburned lips. After successful lip reconstruction surgery, he began using lip balm every day to protect and moisturize his lips. Wayne became dissatisfied with industry standard lip balm dispensers because the knurled disk base would twist and rotate in his pants pockets…thereby mashing the balm into the cap…making a gooey mess. Many people told Wayne they experienced the exact same gooey mess.

Lip Cancer Prevention

To solve this problem, Wayne went to his garage and invented a much better lip balm dispenser system including a firmer twist base and tighter fitting cap. BALMSHOT was the result of this innovative effort, and a new Idaho company was born in 2010.

Lip Cancer Prevention

I was kind of shocked to hear about lip cancer because it is not something I have heard much about in the past. I was interested in learning more about how it happens and of course what the odds of someone like me having lip cancer are.

Unlike applying sunblock to help prevent skin cancer, warding off lip cancer by applying the organic pomegranate balmshot is a pleasant step in the right direction.  It smells amazing and comes in such a cute shotgun shell casing, so cool.

Lip Cancer Prevention

Lip Cancer is not uncommon and it is often overlooked according to skincancer.org   Most frequently occurring in fair-skinned males over the age of 50, cancer of the lip comprises approximately 0.6 percent of all cancers in the US.3 Studies have shown that males are 3-13 times more likely to develop lip cancers, likely due to occupation-related sun exposure combined with greater tobacco and alcohol use.

Regular use of photoprotective lip blocks (lip products that contain sunscreen) reduce the risk of lip cancer.15 However, many people remain unaware how important consistent lip protection is. In a study of 299 beachgoers, 94 percent demonstrated a high awareness of the risks of UV damage to the skin in general, but only 69 percent demonstrated a high awareness of risk factors specifically for lip cancer.16 Seventy percent of beachgoers used no lip protection whatsoever, and even among those who otherwise properly applied sunscreen, only 37 percent used any lip protection.

Like many negative things we experience in life, prevention is best.

I never realized how susceptible ips were to sunburn until I got a painful lip burn earlier this spring at an all-day softball tournament. My family could certainly use these balms to avoid that again.
