This year, I decided to make my resolution all about reading, it’s something I have never made time to do before even though it’s both beneficial and enjoyable. Now that I have made the commitment, I have been able to read at least one book each month. That may not seem like much but at the end of the year I will have read at least 12 books and that is a lot for someone who never makes times to read normally.

I remember watching the show Duck Dynasty when it was first airing on television, which seems like so long ago now. It was a reality show and in that sense, it was a lot like the other popular shows on television but there was something that made this show very different than the rest. The family was like no other family currently seen on tv, they weren’t getting into trouble or in the center of scandals like most of the reality tv families popular at the time.
They were close-knit, living in the South, and they had a strong faith which they did not shy away from sharing on television. In fact, they would pray at the dinner table in every episode, something that is rarely seen on television these days. It’s actually the opposite of what it takes to be popular, to be like everybody else, it seems you have to live without a moral compass but despite what is popular or widely accepted, this family shared what was important to them, proudly. That drew me in and although the show is no longer on the air, I still enjoy what the family represents. When I found out that the patriarch of the family, Phil Robertson was putting out a book called The Theft of America’s Soul, I knew it was worth a read.
In his book, Phil talks about the state of America and how generation by generation America has allowed the lines of morality, decency, and virtue to be erased. I couldn’t agree more and think this book is coming out at the perfect time. I have not quite been able to put my finger on what the exact cause of this issue is but I have suspected many sources of the decline of our societies morality in my lifetime. It’s easy to point the finger at things like video games, movies, television, and social media but is it all of these things or just one? Is there something that all of these things have in common? Is it technology or the fast-paced world we now live in where information can be spread globally in an instant? We get information so fast that it can be hard to process it before we are moving on to the next thing.
After reading The Theft of America’s Soul, it became pretty obvious to see what Phil thinks the common denominator is as well as see his plan to fix what has gone so wrong in America. He says that it’s time to take back what the devil has stolen and put God back into our culture. Even if you are not at all religious I think any decent person can agree that if one were to live by the outline the bible lays out, you will have the basic traits of a good person. Being honest, hard-working, and always doing what is right, is no doubt the best way to live. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be what is celebrated these days.
Everyone makes mistakes, not one of us is perfect and we all have moments that we would rather forget from our past that we are not so proud of. Phil makes no excuses for his bad behaviors and has shared them not only in books and on television but he has been helping countless others find their way through his testimony. It goes to show change is possible, people can become what they were meant to be, no matter how far you have strayed from your true self, you can always get back on track.
