All of my life I have wanted to learn another language but have never quite been able to dedicate the time and effort to it. I have tried books on tape and videos but I have always lost interest early on and have retained very little information about the languages I was trying to learn.
Ever since my daughter was very little we have been teaching her Spanish, a little at a time. It was never meant to be anything more than a fun way to order food or talk to friends. As she has gotten older she has been more and more interested in learning other languages and not just for fun. I think most parents are interested in teaching their kids another language but lack the resources that make this task a fun and easy experience.
When I heard about The Valentine Children’s Summer Adventures by Dianne Sibeal Donahoe I was so excited to not only share it with my daughter but I knew other parents would enjoy this as well.
This book is beautifully illustrated by Alice Ratterree and it introduces more than 120 French words to young readers through a story of exploration, imagination and culture. Each page expands the reader’s vocabulary and worldview, turning the difficult task of learning a new language into an enjoyable experience for the whole family.
While reading The Valentine Children’s Summer Adventures the reader becomes involved in the story and you will quickly forget that you are learning another language. The pronunciation keys throughout the story are a great way to help beginners practice pronouncing the new words they are learning properly.
By the end of the adventures the reader will be familiar with French culture and the vocabulary needed to join the Valentine’s adventures of their own. The book actively involves the reader and engages them in learning, not just reading.
