Getting into shape is hard enough without having to worry about how you are going to pay for it. So don’t let the cost of a gym membership and workout equipment be one less excuse to keep you from being in the best shape of your life. These tips for getting fit on a budget will help you get on the right track and help you get in shape without costing you a fortune.
Skip the Gym Memberships
There are plenty of great ways to get a workout in without having to pay a facility to let you use their equipment. Think of the entire world as your gym. When parking at the store, park as far away from the entrance as possible and make use of the space to get in some extra steps. Instead of the elevator, always take the stairs and do a few extra floors to really take advantage of the powerful workout a flight of stairs can provide. A lot of parks provide equipment to work out your entire body and even if you do not have a park-like this nearby, the traditional playground equipment can provide a great workout for mom while the kids play.
Use Your Smartphone
There are so many apps out there that offer everything from a personal trainer to a workout group. The prices will vary depending on which you choose and there are also a lot of free options available that provide workout plans as well as lots of nutrition tips, too. Search terms like workout, exercise, fitness, and get in shape to see a variety of apps to choose from.
No Equipment? No Problem!
Pushups, situps, flutter kicks, pullups, and making use of the stairs are the perfect workouts for those without equipment. Squats, lunges, stretches, and dancing offer a great workout without the need for pricey equipment that barely fits in your home. The gym and all of the fancy equipment may have changed over the years but the basic workouts that you are getting are still the same as they have always been. Riding a bike outside while looking at the scenery instead of riding a bike inside looking at a screen still delivers the same workout. Sticking to the classics can get you into shape without taking up any space in your home or costing you a penny.
- Go for a run on a local trail or take a few laps around your block, no need for a treadmill.
- Run the stairs at your local parking garage, this is free and since people avoid taking the stairs, you will probably be the only one there.
- Jumping Jacks can be a great cardio workout and doing them in your living room doesn’t even require you to leave your home.
- Planking doesn’t require anything other than your body and it can be done in even the smallest of spaces.
- Burpees are another excellent workout that can be done in your home or at the office, no equipment needed and it provides a great workout.
Some household items that can double as weights in a pinch are a gallon of milk, canned foods, laundry detergent, and basically anything with a little weight to it that is easy to handle. If you have an empty gallon and want to increase the weight, fill it with water, kitty litter, or even sand. I prefer using the typical handheld weights and kettlebells for their perfect design, plus they can be picked up pretty cheap at any thrift store or even here on Amazon.
It can be easy to talk yourself out of working out when you are feeling weak and this kind of mentality may lead to paying someone else to help get your mind on the right track. There are probably some people out there that are amazing at this and they may very well be a great resource when it comes to getting others in shape. Keep in mind that no matter how much you pay, the motivation to get up and start moving is ultimately coming from you.
There is no need to pay someone to help you get motivated, there are plenty of experts in this field offering up their best tips online, for free. I find motivation in podcasts, youtube shows, audiobooks, and learning about other people’s stories. I have found the motivation inside of myself just by listening to a few of my favorite Navy Seals. Search for David Goggins or Jocko Willink and you are sure to get fired up to reach your goals in no time.
