Most of us remember The Whistle Stop Cafe from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes although visitors to Juliette, Georgia can enjoy this experience without being fans of the popular film.

The Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliette, Georgia is often referred to as The Fried Green Tomatoes Restaurant. This is mainly due to the movie title and the many Fried Green Tomatoes lovers who travel from all over to see this iconic filming location in person.

Where Was Fried Green Tomatoes Filmed?

The movie Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed in a few different locations but fans of this movie can see some of the most iconic filming locations from the movie by visiting Juliette, Georgia. While there are many to visit, the highlight of the movie landmarks located in the area is for sure The Whistle Stop Cafe.

While visiting Juliette, you can walk the main road known as McCracken Street and see some familiar buildings that were prominently featured in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes.

Behind the Whistle Stop Cafe, you will find the famous BBQ pit from the movie.

Visitors can also see the Opry House located at 342 McCracken Street, Juliette, GA. Also known as the Juliette Opry, visitors can enjoy this family-friendly music venue on the first Saturday of each month.

Sit on the porch at Ruth and Idgie’s place for a picture or head inside for a unique souvenir from this quaint town.

Be sure to head over to the Juliette United Methodist Church Cemetery and visit the graves of Buddy and Ruth.

You will most likely find a few gifts from the bee charmer left at the graves.

Fried Green Tomatoes

As I have already mentioned at the beginning of this post, you don’t need to be a fan of the film Fried Green Tomatoes in order to enjoy a visit to The Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliette, Georgia.

There are lots of cute shops to visit, plenty of delicious food to eat, and many great sights to take in while visiting this charming small town.

The most famous item on the Whistle Stop Cafe Menu is obviously the fried green tomatoes but there are many options on the menu to please even the pickiest of eaters.

If you were to ask any of the locals what they think of the food here and they will tell you that the food at the Whistle Stop Cafe is amazing and that they have never had a bad dish.

Visitors can expect classic southern dishes like country fried steak, catfish, and smoked pork ribs as well as traditional diner fare like burgers and salads.

Tips for Visiting The Whistle Stop Cafe

Visiting the Whistle Stop Cafe is at the top of many people’s travel bucket lists which means that this is a popular spot with a lot of foot traffic. The Whistle Stop Cafe is so popular that you will most likely have to wait for a seat inside but I have a very useful tip to make sure you get the best experience possible when visiting this famous Georgia Filming Location.

I was so thankful to have an insider’s tip that allowed me to get a table inside once the doors opened up for lunch. The cafe’s regular hours are 11 am to 4 pm Thursday – Monday. The Whistle Stop Cafe is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so be sure to plan your trip accordingly.

Despite the popularity and difficulty to get a table at times inside this popular cafe, they do not take reservations. When planning my trip I thought it would be best to get to the cafe a few minutes before they opened the doors. This strategy usually works with restaurants local to my area but I found out that this was not the case when visiting the famous Fried Green Tomatoes restaurant.

Lucky for me, my mother-in-law has visited the town of Juliette, Georgia on multiple occasions. Each time she headed to the Whistle Stop Cafe, she noticed that the number of people waiting outside the door was much higher than the number of tables inside the cafe. People line up and sit on the porch while waiting for the cafe to call their name and it is first come first serve.

So the best way to make sure you get a table at the Whistle Stop Cafe is to arrive 45 minutes before they open up for the day. Walk up to the door and add your party’s name to a list. To be clear, they do not take reservations but they do have a waiting list that you can sign up for before they open.

When the cafe opens for the day someone will come outside and call the names off of the list in the order they were added. The seating inside is limited although they did just add a few more seats recently to try to accommodate the growing crowds who want to try the famous Fried Green Tomatoes.

If you want to skip the non-airconditioned dining experience but want to grab some food to go, you should put your name on the list to make sure you get your order shortly after the cafe opens.

The Whistle Stop Cafe is located at 443 McCrackin St. in Juliette, Georgia.

Once you have seen everything Juliette Georgia offers you can head West to Senoia to see a couple of other filming locations from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes.

Visitors can see the bridge where Ruth and Idgie watch Buddy try to retrieve Ruth’s hat before tragedy strikes. You can also see a beautiful Victorian house known as The Threadgood Home in the movie. This home is also known as the Travis-McDaniel home and it is located in Senoia Georgia.
