Are mozzarella cheese sticks keto-friendly?

Yes, mozzarella cheese sticks are keto-friendly. In fact, they are a great snack when you want something filling and quick. I always keep a pretty good stock of these cheese sticks in my fridge.

I get a better deal when shopping in the store but I wanted to make sure you know which ones I am talking about because they are the best in my opinion.

Which cheese is best for frying?

When making mozzarella sticks that are keto-friendly I start with my favorite mozzarella sticks and what I consider to be the best keto pork rinds. You can use your favorite brand of mozzarella sticks and pork rinds but keep in mind that this may alter your results, although that is unlikely.

I tried researching which cheese was best for frying and the only thing I could come up with was a list of different varieties of cheeses. Since this cheese stick recipe uses mozzarella this didn’t apply.

So far, I have not been able to pinpoint one brand over another when using mozzarella so feel free to use whichever brand you have on hand.

Can I fry mozzarella sticks without freezing them?

This is an important step because when it comes to making the breading stick to the cheese, the egg just doesn’t do the job by itself. Plus, mozzarella has a high melting point so ensuring an even cook relies heavily on this step.

To answer the question, can I fry mozzarella sticks without freezing them, yes of course but don’t expect a picture-perfect outcome. The breading will most likely fall off and the cheese may become too gooey too fast. So, if you have the time, pop those delicious morsels into the freezer before deep frying!

How do you make fried mozzarella without breading?

This low-carb fried cheese recipe uses breading but you could skip that step and the freezing part if you want to try making fried mozzarella without breading. Your keto appetizer won’t have a crispy outside and a burst of flavor that the breading provides but fried cheese is fried cheese, it’s going to be amazing either way.

Why do mozzarella sticks have so many carbs?

The brand of cheese sticks that I use most has only one gram of carbs listed on the nutrition label. This seems like a reasonable amount to me and since the breading I use for this recipe is also low in carbs, these mozzarella sticks are perfect for keto.

Can you fry mozzarella sticks in coconut oil?

Yes, you can fry mozzarella sticks in coconut oil and some people would probably prefer the flavor that using coconut oil will add to this low-carb recipe.

I prefer olive oil when frying in a pan or using animal fats when using a deep fryer but this can be a concern for those worried about their saturated fat intake.

This recipe is pretty versatile but be sure to adjust the cooking time depending on the type of oil you use for frying. The mozzarella sticks can easily burn so be sure to keep an eye on them when experimenting with different frying methods.

How to Make Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks

Get Your Ingredients

The first step to making the perfect keto mozzarella sticks is to get everything ready, start by getting all of the measuring cups, ingredients, and bowls out.

Prepare the Breading

Grind pork rinds using a food processor to a fine powder, pour into a bowl, and set aside. Add the other dry ingredients to another bowl, and set aside.

Next, add the eggs to a third bowl. Beat them and set them aside. Cut all of the mozzarella sticks in half. Or if you would prefer cheese bites, cut the mozzarella sticks into 4 equal chunks.

Bread the Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks

Dredge every piece of mozzarella in the flour mixture until well coated.
Dip it in the egg, being sure to shake off any excess.
Then roll the egg-washed mozzarella sticks in the pork rinds until well coated.

Freeze the Mozzarella Sticks

The next step is optional but it does help to make a better mozzarella stick if you have the time to spare.
Freeze the mozzarella sticks on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.

Place the cookie sheet in the freezer for about 45 minutes or prepare ahead of time and only take the sticks out when you are ready to fry them.

Heat Up the Oil

Whether you are using olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, or animal fats, be sure to heat up the oil before beginning to cook the mozzarella sticks.

Fry the Cheese Sticks

Heat the oil or animal fat in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, fry the mozzarella sticks in a single layer, this should take about 1-2 minutes per side.

They are done cooking when they are golden brown and melty inside. This can vary depending on the level of gooey cheese you want. I like an extra crisp crunchy texture so I cook them longer for myself but my husband likes them on the softer side so I take them out earlier for him.
