How to Make Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks

Step 1: Make the Keto Breading

To make the breading, use a food processor to grind pork rinds into a fine powder.

Place the powdered pork rinds into one bowl and set it aside. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining dry ingredients and set that bowl aside as well.

Next, add the eggs to a third bowl. Beat them and set them aside.

Cut all of the mozzarella sticks in half. Or if you would prefer cheese bites, cut the mozzarella sticks into 4 equal chunks.

Step 2: Bread the Low Carb Mozzarella Sticks

Dredge every piece of mozzarella in the flour mixture until well coated. Dip it in the egg, being sure to shake off any excess.

Step 3: Optional: Freeze the Mozzarella Sticks

The next step is optional but it does help to make a better mozzarella stick if you have the time to spare.

Freeze the mozzarella sticks on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.

Place the cookie sheet in the freezer for about 45 minutes or prepare ahead of time and only take the sticks out when you are ready to fry them.

This helps to keep the breading together during the cooking process.

Step 4: Heat the Oil

Be sure to heat the oil before beginning to cook the mozzarella sticks. You can use your choice of oil.

  • olive oil
  • coconut oil
  • avocado oil
  • animal fats

Step 5: Fry the Cheese Sticks

Heat the oil or animal fat in a skillet over medium heat.

Once hot, fry the mozzarella sticks in a single layer, this should take about 1-2 minutes per side.

Achieve perfection when the mozzarella sticks turn a delightful golden brown, revealing a gooey, melty interior.

The level of gooey cheese can be customized to your preference.

If you savor an extra crisp, crunchy texture, extend the cooking time. On the other hand, if a softer bite is preferred, remove them from the heat a bit earlier.

Tailor the cooking process to suit your taste—whether it’s a satisfying crunch or a more tender consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cheese is best for frying?

When making fried mozzarella sticks that are keto-friendly I start with my favorite mozzarella cheese sticks and what I consider to be the best keto pork rinds.

Feel free to choose your preferred brand of mozzarella sticks and pork rinds for this recipe.

So far, I have not been able to pinpoint one brand over another when using mozzarella so feel free to use whichever brand you have on hand.

Can I fry mozzarella sticks without freezing them?

This is an important step because when it comes to making the breading stick to the cheese, the egg just doesn’t do the job by itself. Plus, mozzarella has a high melting point so ensuring an even cook relies heavily on this step.

To answer the question, can I fry mozzarella sticks without freezing them, yes of course but don’t expect a picture-perfect outcome. The breading will most likely fall off and the cheese may become too gooey too fast.

So, if you have the time, pop those delicious morsels into the freezer before deep frying!

Can you fry mozzarella sticks in coconut oil?

Yes, you can fry mozzarella sticks in coconut oil and some people would probably prefer the flavor that using coconut oil will add to this low-carb recipe.

I prefer olive oil when frying in a pan or using animal fats when using a deep fryer but this can be a concern for those worried about their saturated fat intake.

This recipe is pretty versatile but be sure to adjust the cooking time depending on the type of oil you use for frying.

The mozzarella sticks can easily burn so be sure to keep an eye on them when experimenting with different frying methods.
