Gratitude Journal Prompts for Happiness
Sometimes you have to lose everything in order for you to see things from a different perspective that allows you to appreciate what you do have in your life.
Earlier this year I spent 50 days in the hospital and during that time I missed both the big and the little things that come so easily to most people. I even missed the things that I had complained about in the past, things that everyone takes for granted from time to time.
I wanted to cook my family a meal, clean my house, get back to work, sleep in my own bed, and couldn’t wait to be able to walk without an IV pole, eat food that doesn’t come through the previously mentioned IV, or breath in fresh air from outside.
Things like this never ran through my head before when thinking of gratitude, usually I go to the traditional list of things like I am grateful for my family or my home. Although I am very grateful for these things they don’t exactly dig deep and bring out any emotion when I am trying to list things in my gratitude journal.
A gratitude journal should evoke emotions, you need to really feel gratitude in order for it to be effective. I don’t wish my illness or hospital stay on anyone even if it is a great way to get perspective on what really matters in life. Instead I am sharing some of my favorite Gratitude Prompts that will help you gain a new perspective on life and bring you happiness.
Gratitude Journal Prompts for Happiness
I Am Grateful For…
I Really Enjoyed…
I Am Excited To…
I Was Surprised By…
Something That Made Me Smile…
Something I Found Beautiful Was…
Something That Made Me Laugh…
One Thing I Learned…
These prompts remind me of how lucky I am really am to live the life that I have. When I take a few minutes to answer these gratitude journal prompts for happiness I am immediately reminded of how amazing my life is even in the most mundane circumstances.
Simple things like taking a drive with my family down a gravel road and hopping out of the car to snap a quick photo with farm animals we meet along the way, always puts a smile on my face.
We seriously do this quite often, the first family photo we had taken since moving to Iowa is of my family standing in front of some cows we seen while driving through a nearby Amish Town. We set up a tripod on the road and stood in front of the cows while people driving by gave us much deserved crazy looks.
I am grateful that I was able to leave the hospital and heal up well enough to be able to drive my daughter to school on her first day of sixth grade.
I am so grateful to see her beautiful face everyday and notice all of the changes as she grows up right before my eyes.
I feel extremely grateful that we live in a place where we have easy access to clean drinking water instead of having to spend all of our time retrieving water that isn’t clean or safe to drink like many communities in Ethiopia have to on a daily basis.
Could you imagine having to carry 40lbs of water around all day? I am very thankful that I don’t have to do that and I am thankful that there are ways to help out those that do.
I am also grateful that companies like Emergen-C® are raising money for those communities in Ethiopia with The #40Pounds Challenge. You can participate by uploading a photo of yourself holding something that weighs 40lbs and adding @EmergenC and #40Pounds to your Instagram or Twitter post.
For every #40Pounds Challenge picture uploaded, Emergen-C will donate $5 to charity water to help fund projects that bring clean, accessible water to communities in Ethiopia.
I recently picked up some Raspberry Emergen-C® from Walmart and now I am also thankful for having access to products like this, in multiple flavors too I might add.
- “Emerge and See. Emerge restored. Emerge replenished. Emerge Fortified*” *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
- “Emergen-C® is packed with B vitamins, antioxidants† , electrolytes plus more vitamin C than 10 oranges^. With over 20 flavors, you have plenty of delicious varieties to choose from.” † Zinc and Manganese ^Based on the USDA.gov nutrient database value for a large, raw orange.
I once again and reminded of how thankful I am for having access to clean water because once I got my Emergen-C® home, I couldn’t wait to try it out.
I love what it says on the side of the box, it’s sweet; it’s nutritious; it’s berry-licious!

I think this is exactly what I need. On the days when I feel like life is getting the best of me having a gratitude journal could help me snack back.

The raspberry flavor is really good and so is the pink lemonade. I have a space for gratitude in my daily planner, and I Try to remember to fill it out daily!
