Sweet Potato Chews for Dogs

I have recently shared a recipe for 30 Minute Apple Chips using the Power AirFryer Oven thanks to a partnership with the brand, and I have been getting creative with it ever since.

I love coming up with new ways to use my favorite machines in the kitchen and the Power AirFryer Oven has kept me busy since it can be used in so many ways. These easy DIY sweet potato dog chews are my favorite recipe to utilize this machine so far.

I put the pro-grade dehydrator feature to good use recently making homemade dog treats and it was so easy!

Dehydrated Sweet Potato Dog Treats Air Fryer Questions

Through the feedback on this post from social media and on the blog, I have learned a few things about these dehydrated sweet potato dog treats.

Does every dog love dehydrated sweet potato dog treats?

No! Unfortunately, I have heard from a handful of people that not all dogs enjoy these sweet potato chews. That doesn’t mean that this recipe isn’t perfect in every way and if your dog likes this kind of thing, they will love these sweet potato fries dog treats. It just means that some dogs are picky, and maybe your pet will enjoy these sweet potato jerky treats for dogs, but maybe they won’t.

It’s just like anything you buy for your pets, you know your dog better than I do. So chances are that I have never even made eye contact with your dog, so use your best judgment.

Can You Make Sweet Potato Dehydrated Dog Treats in an Oven?

Yes! Set your oven to 250 degrees and place the sweet potato chews on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake the dried sweet potato dog treats for about an hour and a half before flipping them.

Then cook for about another hour and a half, checking at the two-hour mark and then every 15 minutes or so until they reach the proper temperature. How long to dehydrate sweet potatoes for dogs can vary depending on moisture level, thickness, and oven temperature.

Can Humans Eat Dried-Out Sweet Potatoes?

Of course, these are super healthy but probably not the tastiest for us humans. Although I guess they looked appealing to someone because if you dig deep enough in my social media comments you can see the real person that asked me this question.

Honestly, I wish I liked them because Daisy looks like she is having a blast when chewing on them and it would be better than chewing on my nails.

How to Store Dehydrated Sweet Potato for Dogs

It is best to store this dried sweet potato dog treats in an airtight container. Be sure to let them cool completely before storing them. How long they will last will vary. I have some followers who reported these lasted for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.

The moisture left in the sweet potatoes, how many times they are opened, or the humidity in your home can have an impact on longevity.

They usually don’t last more than a couple of days in my house because Daisy just loves them! So I haven’t personally had any experience with keeping them for a long time. But I always keep them in an airtight container on the counter.

I hope your dogs enjoy this treat and hope you enjoyed learning how to dehydrate sweet potatoes in an air fryer for dogs.

  4. I think Odin would enjoy these. He really loves sweet potatoes and I will make them for him when we have them. Iam going to have to try this. Odin is a senior so I might have to have them a bit less crispy!

  5. We just completed the Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan and both our dogs are intolerant to every dog treat made. This will be a great idea for treats. Our puppy is only eight months old and still in training so this should work well. I’m also going to try beef jerky in our air fryer.

    • I would think so, please do tell me how it turns out. Be sure to use a low temperature for a long period of time, that has proven the best way to dehydrate in my experience. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I put them in oven on 250 degrees for a few hours. I didn’t peel them just sliced thin as possible & sprinkled them with cinnamon. Our dog loves them.

    • I am not sure how long they last for sure but I would say if kept in a sealed container, a week or two should be no problem. If you want them to last longer, maybe try freezing them. I have not tried this yet so I do not know what type of results you may get but if you do, please let me know about your results. Thanks for stopping by!

    • @Nicole,
I make these in batches all the time. Place them in pint size jars with a 100cc oxygen packet and place on lid and ring tight. I like to make 6 at a time. The jars will self seal until you open. Once opened the oxygen packet is no longer active, so just keep one jar open in the fridge and the others in a cool dark place. The oxygen packets remove most oxygen so preserves them. If you have a food saver you can seal the jars without an oxygen packet.

  7. You start out talking about the air fryer but the recipe says to make these in a dehydrator. Not the air fryer?

    • Hi Valarie, thanks for stopping by! The Air Fryer oven that I use is an all in one. If you click the link at the top of the post, you can see exactly which one I use for all of my recipes. It is a great investment and such a versatile machine.

  8. I have a batch in the dehydrator right now. Thanks for the great reminder-I’ve been meaning to do this for quite some time. I bought two big sweet potatoes, scrubbed them well, scored the skins lengthwise, then sliced them using the mandolin. Our two old doggers are gonna be so happy!

  9. I don’t have a dehydrator, so I have made these by putting them on cookie sheets and leaving them in the oven overnight on my lowest setting. I don’t let them get crisp, my dog doesn’t like crispy/crunchy, but she goes nuts for chewy. Have you ever done store-bought sweet potato fries and wrapped them with thin strips of bacon? She loves her bacon, again more chewy than crispy. I cook them the same way. I’ve always said I wouldn’t feed my dog something I couldn’t eat and these are really delicious!

    • I am so glad you liked this recipe and more importantly that your dog likes it. 🙂 I have not tried the store-bought fries, but that sounds like a fun experiment. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  11. Is this 90 degrees celcius or farhenheit? I’ve made a couple of batches at 60c for around 6 hours in my air fryer dehydrator so I’m thinking it must be farhenheit if it’s for 12 hours.

  12. Are you suppose to bake them or Blanch them before you make them. I’ve seen so many recipes that said this. So can you tell me do you do that?

    • Hi Sandra, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I do not blanch them before dehydrating, this is an interesting method. If you give it a try please do come back and share your results with us.

  14. We grow a few rows of sweet potatoes each year, and our dog gets sweet potatoes daily as part of his meals. About 40% by volume of his daily food consumption are small cubes of fresh sweet potatoes (with skin) that have been softened by steaming them in a bit of water in a microwave as he is old now and no longer likes foods that are hard to chew. His digestion is so much better since we switched to sweet potatoes from canned dog food that we had added to his dry food.
