Sweet Potato Chews for Dogs

I have recently shared a recipe for 30 Minute Apple Chips using the Power AirFryer Oven thanks to a partnership with the brand, and I have been getting creative with it ever since.

I love coming up with new ways to use my favorite machines in the kitchen and the Power AirFryer Oven has kept me busy since it can be used in so many ways. These easy DIY sweet potato dog chews are my favorite recipe to utilize this machine so far.

I put the pro-grade dehydrator feature to good use recently making homemade dog treats and it was so easy!

I like to make my sweet potato chews in two different sizes so that my dogs can enjoy them as a long-lasting chew as well as a quick treat.

I make them all at the same time and keep some in longer to ensure a crisper sweet potato chew and take the sweet potato fries out when they reach the chewy texture my dogs enjoy.

Sweet Potato Dog Treats Air Fryer Ingredients

These air fryer dehydrated sweet potato dog treats only require one ingredient, sweet potatoes. That is one of the things I love about sharing how to make sweet potato dog treats in air fryer, it’s so simple. Your pet deserves a treat and this is such a healthy simple option that you can’t lose!

Dehydrated Sweet Potato Dog Treats Air Fryer Questions

Through the feedback on this post from social media and on the blog, I have learned a few things about these dehydrated sweet potato dog treats.

Does every dog love dehydrated sweet potato dog treats?

No! Unfortunately, I have heard from a handful of people that not all dogs enjoy these sweet potato chews. That doesn’t mean that this recipe isn’t perfect in every way and if your dog likes this kind of thing, they will love these sweet potato fries dog treats. It just means that some dogs are picky, and maybe your pet will enjoy these sweet potato jerky treats for dogs, but maybe they won’t.

It’s just like anything you buy for your pets, you know your dog better than I do. So chances are that I have never even made eye contact with your dog, so use your best judgment.

Can You Make Sweet Potato Dehydrated Dog Treats in an Oven?

Yes! Set your oven to 250 degrees and place the sweet potato chews on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake the dried sweet potato dog treats for about an hour and a half before flipping them.

Then cook for about another hour and a half, checking at the two-hour mark and then every 15 minutes or so until they reach the proper temperature. How long to dehydrate sweet potatoes for dogs can vary depending on moisture level, thickness, and oven temperature.

Can Humans Eat Dried-Out Sweet Potatoes?

Of course, these are super healthy but probably not the tastiest for us humans. Although I guess they looked appealing to someone because if you dig deep enough in my social media comments you can see the real person that asked me this question.

Honestly, I wish I liked them because Daisy looks like she is having a blast when chewing on them and it would be better than chewing on my nails.

How to Store Dehydrated Sweet Potato for Dogs

It is best to store this dried sweet potato dog treats in an airtight container. Be sure to let them cool completely before storing them. How long they will last will vary. I have some followers who reported these lasted for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.

The moisture left in the sweet potatoes, how many times they are opened, or the humidity in your home can have an impact on longevity.

They usually don’t last more than a couple of days in my house because Daisy just loves them! So I haven’t personally had any experience with keeping them for a long time. But I always keep them in an airtight container on the counter.

I hope your dogs enjoy this treat and hope you enjoyed learning how to dehydrate sweet potatoes in an air fryer for dogs.

We grow a few rows of sweet potatoes each year, and our dog gets sweet potatoes daily as part of his meals. About 40% by volume of his daily food consumption are small cubes of fresh sweet potatoes (with skin) that have been softened by steaming them in a bit of water in a microwave as he is old now and no longer likes foods that are hard to chew. His digestion is so much better since we switched to sweet potatoes from canned dog food that we had added to his dry food.

Are you suppose to bake them or Blanch them before you make them. I've seen so many recipes that said this. So can you tell me do you do that?

Hi Sandra, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I do not blanch them before dehydrating, this is an interesting method. If you give it a try please do come back and share your results with us.
