Supplies Needed

To make this DIY Patriotic Hanging Sign, you will need the following supplies:

  • Reclaimed fence pickets
  • Red, white, and blue paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Jute or twine
  • Burlap for bow
  • Drill and drill bits

Preparing the Fence Pickets

We found our fence pickets at a garage sale, sold to us by a veteran who had used them to create a snowman. These pickets were perfect for our project and added a rustic charm.

Cut the Pickets

  • Cut the fence pickets into three sections of your desired length. We cut ours into equal lengths to form the three parts of our sign.

Sand the Edges

  • Sand any rough edges to ensure a smooth finish.

Painting the Pickets

Choose Your Colors

  • We used traditional patriotic colors: red, white, and blue.

Apply the Paint

  • Paint each section a different color. We applied two coats of paint for full coverage, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly.

Adding Text and Design

Personalize Your Sign

  • Use a small paintbrush to add your desired text. We chose a patriotic phrase for our sign.

Drilling Holes for Hanging

Drill the Holes

  • Drill holes in the corners of the top and middle sections. The bottom section only needs two holes at the top for hanging.

Assembling the Sign

String the Jute

  • Thread jute or twine through the holes to connect the sections. Tie secure knots to hold each piece in place.

Add a Hanger

  • Attach two more pieces of jute from the top section to create a hanger for the entire sign.

Adding Finishing Touches

Add a Burlap Bow

  • Tie a bow using burlap and attach it to the top of the sign for a decorative touch.

FAQs

Can I use new fence pickets instead of reclaimed ones?

Yes, new pickets from a home improvement store will work just as well, though reclaimed pickets add a unique rustic look.

What type of paint should I use?

We recommend using outdoor paint to ensure your sign withstands the elements if displayed outside.

This DIY Patriotic Hanging Sign is a great project to celebrate patriotic holidays like the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Flag Day while adding a touch of rustic charm to your decor. It’s simple, budget-friendly, and a wonderful way to repurpose old materials.

This is adorable and I'm copying you and making it. e have a bunch of pallets that I break apart and make things with. I really need to find a place to post them and will be coming back to check out your other crafts! My husband doesn't go picking with me but once I get the stuff home, he's all in fixing it up or making it into something.

This sign is so fun! I love how fast and easy it is to make. I think if I made it, I would use a stars and stripes print ribbon for the bow to make it even more festive!
