If you are looking for a fun place to take the whole family that is both educational and full of excitement, I suggest heading over to Hansen’s Dairy Farm.
Not only will you learn how your dairy products are made but you get a real hands-on experience at the dairy farm that lets you interact with cows and even kangaroos.
That wasn’t a typo, I actually fed a kangaroo at a dairy farm in Iowa.
I never thought I would put those words together but that is just one of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that were made possible by visiting Hansen’s.
I was blown away by how soft they were and how they moved around. I never thought I would see a kangaroo up close let alone pet and feed one….in Iowa.
This was my husband’s favorite part of the tour.
My daughter and I love to see cows even though living in Iowa you pass them almost every day while driving, we still get excited every time we see them.
When we found out that we were going to be bottle-feeding a baby cow, we couldn’t wait to hop on the trolley at Hansen’s Dairy Farm and start the tour!
While touring the dairy farm, our tour guide taught us all about the Hansen family and the history of the farm.
We were able to ask questions along the way and I was surprised how fast they had an answer to even some of the most unexpected questions.
When purchasing milk at the grocery store I often see homogenized on all of the milk jugs for sale. I didn’t even know what that meant until we took this fun-filled tour at Hansen’s.
Did you know that homogenization breaks down the molecules of milk, which destroys its natural state?
Hansen’s milk is non-homogenized and that means even some people with lactose intolerance say they can consume Hansen’s products with no ill effects!
That is great news for anyone that has had to avoid dairy products in the past and they are in for a real treat when they try any of Hansen’s products.
My daughter and I loved bottle-feeding the baby cows the most. Who wouldn’t?
Although there is so much more to see, it is worth the trip out to Hansen’s Dairy Farm just to be able to experience this once in your life.
Speaking of once in a lifetime experience, we got to milk a cow! Everyone on the tour got a chance and I think the adults enjoyed it as much as the kids did!
Not only did we see where the milk comes from but we also learned how it is used in all of the delicious products Hansen’s has to offer including, ice cream, cheese curds, and butter.
We were thrilled to try a sample of each of these products and we even got to make our own butter!
We each received a jar with cream inside and we were told to shake it. We were given crackers and salt to taste the butter once it was ready.
You could tell most of us were skeptical about this process working out, which means most people don’t even know where their food comes from or how it is made.
That is reason enough to take a trip to Hansen’s and bring the whole family!
My mom shook her jar like crazy and had tons of fun doing it. She was blown away by the results and this was her favorite part of our tour of Hansen’s Dairy Farm.
While watching an interesting short video on how the products are made, we received samples of the products and my favorite was the Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!
It was so creamy and I am willing to bet it was the freshest Ice Cream I have ever had!
I’m glad I can purchase these products at several retailers and even enjoy them at some of my favorite restaurants.
If you are looking for a fun day that the whole family will enjoy be sure to visit Hansen’s Dairy Farm in Hudson, Iowa.

Aww those kangroos are so cute. I wish I had the opportunity to see some of those. It looks like you guys had a great time at the farm. I miss going on thos farm field trips when you are in school. Surprisingly none of my kids have had any so far. I'll have to look for a dairy farm near us for a visit soon.

Oh wow, what a neat experience for the kids. I grew up on a small farm. We use to have cows and all kinds of animals. When my dad retired, he still takes care of his cows and chickens.

What fun you had at the farm! I never knew what homogenized meant until you explained it. That is good to know. From now on I will check the labels of the milk I am buying.
